Skol Vikings!

Apparently, "skol" roughly translates to something like "cheers." At least they're not endorsing chewing tobacco.

I went to my first NFL game today! Vikings vs. Bengals at the Metrodome. The Metrodome itself is less than impressive, but it was cool to be so closed to the loved/hated Brett FavRE.

Mod-Vil

Due the renovation of the Old Science building on campus, our office has been kindly asked to move out of our comfy home in Hector R. Skifter hall and move into ... a trailer. Excuse me, I mean, the Modular Village.

While I did get to upgrade my desk, there are things that will be missed in the coming year to year-and-a-half.

Like having an attractive workspace.

Or having a nice view of trees and squirrels that hop into your windowsill and peek in at you (they have a horrible peeping problem).

Not that the Modular Village is devoid of wildlife: In fact, at least two cats live under the trailer next door, and we often hear chattering and thumping sounds under our own trailer ... probably raccoons. Fun.

Sunsets

We get to see so many great sunsets at our place. Pictures never do them justice, especially crappy iPhone pictures. Someday I will paint one so we can always remember living here.

Painting the guest room

The guest room is now painted! We went with Behr Harvest Brown for the walls, and I found some sheets in a similar color at Target. The awesome teal pillow shams have arrived from Crate and Barrel, but no sign of the bedspread yet. Since this is going to be the Map Room, I picked up a fun red-orange map pillow at IKEA. I inherited a bed and dresser from my Grandma Krueger, and a coat of Old English really helped. Now we just have to get rid of the blaze orange that lingers on the inside of the bedroom door.

Chaaaaarrrrrlliiiiiieeeeee

The masks for our Halloween costumes arrived! Now to find some pink, blue, and white sweatsuits. Methinks a trip to Walmart is in my future.

La Mesa y los piñas

We saw these awesome chairs at La Mesa in Papillion. My best guess is that they depict a pineapple farmer ...

... stabbing the pineapples ...

... gently cradling the pineapples ...

... and then taking a nap.

Meandering Mississippi

I finally arted! This is the first painting I have made since graduating from college, oh, 4 years ago. It was fun, it was frustrating, it was relaxing and stressful, at times I thought it looked great and other times I wanted to quit completely. But, I've finally gotten it to the point where I'm happy with it. After seeing the finished product, I'm much more likely to keep this up.

A little history on this painting: this was created for some friends from my hometown who are raising money for an adoption. They asked friends and family to donate items to be auctioned off. You can view my painting and all the items at http://www.j4hauction.blogspot.com/ as well as read their story about their adoption quest.

Oye Como Va

This weekend we went to the Como Zoo with Nadam. It is seriously better than the Minnesota Zoo, and it's free. We saw a giraffe drinking from water fountain, monkeys with handlebar mustaches, an ostrich pecking a metal fence, and snow leopards licking a rock. Oh, and pervy old dudes peeking through the flowers and taking pictures of nude statues.

We also went mini golfing at Centennial Lakes, where I got my first hole in one. Ever. In any sport. I still managed to get last place, though.

Let's sail away, find our own country ... we'll build a house and bed out of palm trees

Andrew and I found this house while biking in St. Paul along the river. We loved it so much that we painted our bedroom blue with white trim. Maybe someday we will build a house as awesome as this one. I wonder if they have ever seen us standing out front, wantin' on their house.

I mean, I really think you like me

Yesterday marked our one year anniversary. In some ways it seems like our wedding was just a couple of months ago, but at the same time, it seems like we've always been together.

We spent the weekend in Red Wing eating delicious foods at NOSH (twice), stargazing on the pier, hiking along the bluffs in Frontenac State park, and revisiting Mt. Frontenac Golf Course. They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. If that's true, we've got some smooth sailing ahead of us.

I love you, Andrew, always.

Lonnie

We're watching Neil and Beth's dog, Lonnie, this weekend. He follows me everywhere, but he has been a very good house guest.

Eggs and Peanuts

Andrew, Heidi, and I saw some crazy stuff at the Uptown Art Fair. I mean, I love art, but I'm not going to put super creepy/disturbing/weird art in my home. Like this scary Humpty Dumpty statue.

While running back to our car after the Irish Festival we spotted Snoopy's doghouse and Lucy's Psychiatric Help booth. Nobody was home.

My goal in life

No, not to be a huss(y). To make a website dedicated to signs that are either defaced or burnt out in hilarious fashions. Such as this one Andrew spotted after the Aquatennial Fireworks show last night.

Something else awesome happened at Aquatennial. We didn't have cash to use the parking ramp, so we parked on a side street and walked over. We also didn't have quarters for the meter, so Andrew went back later to get our blankets from the car and fill the meter. At the end of the night, we got close to the car and realized that neither one of us has the keys. Andrew was ready to run back and look for them, thinking they fell out of his pocket while watching the fireworks. But ... he had left them. Dangling out of the door lock. For four hours. And no one took them! Way to be honest/nonobservant, Minneapolis.

Who likes to rock the party?

We like to rock the party.

Sunday afternoon we played some mini-golf at Centennial Lakes Park with our good friends, Dave and Liz. There were a lot of people enjoying the nice weather, so it was slow going. It was worth the wait, though, because Andrew got to use his new putter and Dave got a hole in one.

Neopolitan 'Za!

Last night we tried making neopolitan pizza from scratch using dough from some Italian place in Omaha, tomatoes from Bridgewater Produce Farm near St. Olaf, mozzarella from Cossetta's, and basil from our bedroom. It tasted good.

Tom, Nate, and Cristina came over to enjoy the goodness. We recently got to bust out the rest of our wedding presents, so it was fun to set the table and have it look nice.

once in a lifetime

12:34 is my favorite time. It's way cooler than 11:11. So what could be better than 12:34?

12:34:56, 7/8/9!

Good thing I was ready for a(n?) historic screen shot.

7/6/09

Oooooooooooooo! maha!

We spent July 1-5 in Omaha. Wednesday, we checked out Lauritzen Gardens. It was hot, and all their plants seemed pretty ordinary. I got some huge mosquito bites from our walk on the Woodland Path. We also found a plant labeled "Poison Ivy" and rubbed it on our legs to see if we're allergic. Turns out, we're not. Go, immune systems!
We also met this mean-looking bug. It was like 3 inches long.

I'm just gonna hang by the bar... put out the vibe.

Mitch and Lindsey got married.

Andrew wore the same color as my second-grade teacher and her husband. We were sitting by them the whole time, so they looked pretty cool together in their seafoam green outfits.

We finished the night with a record-setting 27 people hanging by the bar (stage) and putting out the vibe. It was a thing of beauty.

She's got a serrated edge that she moves back and forth

Poster Cabaret has so many great posters, including this one for The National. I still can't get into their music, but I'd buy this poster anyway.

Other good ones:
Andrew Bird
Band of Horses
The Decemberists
Feist
Jimmy Eat World
Sigur Ros

and:
This peacock print

iPhone art

This cover of the New Yorker was made by Jorge Colombo using the $4.99 iPhone app, Brushes!

Brushes is on sale for a limited time for just $3.99.

Handwoven iPhone covers

*drool*

These iPhone covers are the coolest. I guess I'll have to get an iPhone 3G first, though.

5/20/09

a lamp unto my feet

I have a new arty mission in life: to try making one of these lamps. They are made from dried gourds which are painted with intricate patterns. Tiny holes are drilled in them and filled with colored beads. Somehow the electrical parts of a lamp are put in there and -- voila! GourdLamp. I just ordered two gourds on eBay. Weird.
Visit their Etsy store.

No, I'm not a Mormon...

...but this letterpress poster of the Salt Lake Temple rocks.

5/18/09

Paul and Babe

Now that I'm a Minnesotan, I think I need this. And maybe this.

5/15/09

I could sleep ...

... under this amazing quilt. I like the more modern-looking pattern. I wonder if Andrew's mom could make one for us? Maybe in green, blue, and purple (our wedding colors)! Instructions and pattern on the purl bee.

5/13/09

Soothing colors

I love the calm colors of this bedroom. I think it would go nicely with the maps (below). Via Apartment Therapy.

Map quest

My birthday present from Andrew arrived! He got me three really awesome maps! The world map is from National Geographic and is huge -- something like 6 feet wide. The two smaller maps of Italy and Rome are actually pieces of wrapping paper. Maybe our future guest bedroom will have to be The Map Room.

2/12/09

Oh, Valentine's Day, you silly Day, you.

I've had some extra time lately, while Andrew is busy murdering zombies, Super-mutants, and enemy soldier-type people, so I busted out the ol' sketchbook and drew me up some Valentines. I guess I'll have to figure out a way to print them now.

Have you ever seen a squirrel with a cheeto? I have. He was so happy.
